Thoughts about his dying child,<br \/>\nor how to keep the farm after the fire<br \/>\nnever enter his mind. Not that he\u2019s so<br \/>\npreoccupied with balancing himself<br \/>\nin his workboots, but that the deaths of child<br \/>\nand farm haven\u2019t yet happened, couldn\u2019t happen<br \/>\non such a luminous night, the gauzy moon<br \/>\njust rising over her father\u2019s roof as if<br \/>\nto guide him there. The only howling comes<br \/>\nfrom her dog, Shep, who has already heard<br \/>\nhis lurching steps, and perhaps even smells<br \/>\nthe hurt bird he holds in his coat, a gift<br \/>\nhe can hardly wait to give.
