And so,<br \/>\nthe voices of younger sisters<br \/>\nand neighbor girls coming through<br \/>\nthe window from the far<br \/>\nfield, she rises<br \/>\nto follow the aunt,<br \/>\nand finding the tall closed<br \/>\nbarrier between them contains<br \/>\na small keyhole, kneels down<br \/>\nto look right through,<br \/>\nsearching she does not know<br \/>\nfor what\u2014a secret woman<br \/>\ncombing out her hair?<br \/>\nThe photograph of a man<br \/>\nplaced on a throne<br \/>\nof bureau and doily?<br \/>\nIn that door\u2019s eye she sees<br \/>\nold repetitious pears across a wall<br \/>\nand, reaching inside the small,<br \/>\nbare bureau to pull<br \/>\na nightdress out,<br \/>\nher naked aunt,<br \/>\nnow turning to show<br \/>\nin the very place where she<br \/>\nherself has just begun<br \/>\nto darken, a gray, matted<br \/>\nand forgotten V.
