Already<br \/>\nthe mother was saying&nbsp;<em>please,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>oh please<\/em>, partly to me,<br \/>\npartly because she heard<br \/>\nthe sound, so soft<br \/>\nand far off at first<br \/>\nyou might have never guessed it<br \/>\nwas going to be the father<br \/>\nwith his eyes shut, screaming.<br \/>\nBut I knew, and I knew<br \/>\neven before it stopped<br \/>\nand he began to point<br \/>\ndown at his son&#8217;s<br \/>\nsteel feet and whatever<br \/>\nwas inside the dead<br \/>\nballoons of his pants,<br \/>\nthe father did it. So when<br \/>\nhe said he did it,<br \/>\nI was thinking of how<br \/>\nonly his mouth was moving<br \/>\nin his shut face like<br \/>\nhe had gone somewhere<br \/>\noutside of his body<br \/>\nwhich he could not stand.<br \/>\nAnd when he said<br \/>\nhe did it because his son<br \/>\nburned the new barn down<br \/>\nto the ground, then shook<br \/>\nand shook so you could see<br \/>\nhe was inside his body<br \/>\nand could never leave,<br \/>\nall I could think<br \/>\nwas how the wind was moving<br \/>\nthe tent. Lifting it up<br \/>\nand up around the father<br \/>\nwho could not see it lifting,<br \/>\nand the mother with the no-<br \/>\ncolor dress, and that small,<br \/>\nstill boy, all washed up<br \/>\nand dressed up and<br \/>\nlooking right at me<br \/>\nalmost like it was OK<br \/>\nbeing a chest.
