autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to the world&#8217;s deadliest conflict since WWII. \u00a0Over 5.4 million people have lost their lives in the last fifteen years. \u00a0The conflict in the Congo has many different aspects. \u00a0It began largely because of ethnic tensions, political strife, and land rights. \u00a0However, this conflict has evolved into a conflict of profit that is largely fueled by the mineral rich mines in the eastern part of the country. \u00a0The DRC is one of the richest places in the world in terms of natural resources. \u00a0Eastern Congo has a wealth of minerals including Tin, Tungsten, Tantalum, and Gold. \u00a0All of these minerals are integral parts of the electronics we as consumers use everyday such as our laptops and cell phones. \u00a0 Over 50% of the mines in eastern Congo are managed by various rebel and militia groups. \u00a0These armed groups use tactics such as rape in order to control populations to force people off of their land and to find cheap laborers. \u00a0Congo is the most dangerous place in the world to be a woman or a child. \u00a0The armed groups require high taxes to enter the mines and thus make even more profit off of the minerals. \u00a0Much of the profit that is made from the minerals is used to buy arms that further perpetuate the conflict in Congo.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1454\" style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.enoughproject.org\/publications\/comprehensive-approach-conflict-minerals-strategy-paper\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1454\" class=\" wp-image-1454   \" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/conflict-mineral-supply-chain1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/conflict-mineral-supply-chain1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/conflict-mineral-supply-chain1-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This flow chart delineates the supply chain of &quot;conflict minerals.&quot;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Section 1502 of the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform Act passed by Congress in July of 2010 requires companies to trace and audit their supply chains to ensure that they are not financing conflict in the Congo. \u00a0However the Security Exchanges Commission (SEC) has not released the guidelines for companies to follow. \u00a0Therefore, companies have largely been held unaccountable and many continue to fund the deadly conflict in the Congo. \u00a0Some companies such as Nokia and Motorola have taken progressive initiatives on forging the path forward in making &#8220;conflict-free&#8221; products.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3791\" style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisehopeforcongo.org\/content\/conflict-minerals-company-rankings\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3791\" class=\" wp-image-3791 \" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Slide13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Slide13.jpg 720w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Slide13-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Enough Project&#039;s Company Rankings on Progress Towards Becoming &quot;Conflict Free&quot;<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Conflict Mineral Activism:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A number of non-governmental organizations and activists in America and around the world have started to rally behind making the mines in Congo &#8220;conflict-free.&#8221; \u00a0The two biggest voices in this initiative have been the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enoughproject.org\/\">Enough Projec<\/a>t and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/\">Global Witness<\/a>. \u00a0Both organizations have multi-pronged approaches including collaboration with grassroots initiatives on civil society organizations on the ground, influencing policy at the national level, and mobilizing activists around the world to create a consumer demand for &#8220;conflict free&#8221; products. \u00a0One of the biggest campaigns that the Enough Project has organized is called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisehopeforcongo.org\/content\/conflict-free-campus-initiative\">Conflict Free Campus Initiative<\/a> (CFCI). The goal of this campaign is to harness the buying power of the university in order to influence electronic companies to clean up their supply chains. \u00a0Eight universities including Stanford, Clark, and UPenn have passed varied resolutions stating that the university wants and will favor a conflict free product upon its creation.
