International<\/strong> (Al Jazeera<\/a><\/em>)<\/p>\n

Al Jazeera is an independent broadcaster that serves as an Arabic news source.\u00a0 It has been praised for the fact that it often circumvents censorship and contributes to the free exchange of information in the Arab world.\u00a0 We have chosen to report on the top Al Jazeera news stories from the first 18 days of the Egyptian revolution since their coverage of the Egyptian revolution has been described by many people, including Hillary Clinton, as being more informative and less opinion-driven than American journalism.\u00a0 We decided to give a brief overview of the news coverage from each of the first 18 days of the revolution to give important background info on the topic before going more in depth with our news analysis.<\/p>\n

Egyptian News Sources<\/strong>\u00a0(Egypt Today<\/a>, Al-Ahram Weekly<\/a>, Egypt Independent<\/a>, <\/em>Ikhwan Web<\/em><\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n

We thought it was important to include the Egyptian news perspective because as students of anthropology we understand the importance of hearing the voices of the people you study first hand. We made an effort to look at diverse Egyptian media sources in order to get different viewpoints within the country. These news sources include Al-Ahram, a highly praised weekly newspaper published out of Cairo, Egypt Today<\/em>, a magazine popular with the Egyptian youth, IKHWAN Web, the official website of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Egypt Independent an independently run Egyptian news sources that has been on the front lines of revolution.<\/p>\n

Conservative US<\/strong> (The Washington Post<\/a>, The Washington Times<\/a><\/em>)<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0The Washington Post <\/em>is generally more liberal than The Washington Times<\/em>, we found that both news sources portray a right-wing perspective. \u00a0According to The Huffington Post<\/em>, The Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0is the 5th most read paper in the US, while rightwingnews.com ranks\u00a0The Washington Times<\/em>\u00a0as the 8th most popular conservative news source in the country. These two new sources covers the range of right-wing viewpoints.<\/p>\n

Liberal US<\/strong> (The New York Times<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>The Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em>, The Chicago Tribune<\/a><\/em>)
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

We chose to examine\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>, The Los Angeles Times\u00a0<\/em>and The Chicago Tribune<\/em>\u00a0because these are all major American newspapers from major cities that have a more leftist position.\u00a0Each newspaper examined occupies the 4th, 5th, and 6th place respectively on the list of the top 100 most read newspapers in the United States according to infoplease.com.<\/p>\n
