In 2010, newsrooms were 30% smaller than they were in 2000 due to the high number of layoffs the industry has faced in the past decade (Rosentiel and Mitchell, 2011). In March of 2010, Mashable reported that US-Americans are getting more news from the internet than any other news source (O&#8217;Dell, 2011).<\/p>\n<p>This section will examine how social media, photoblogs, billboards, and comics are used by local and\u00a0foreign\u00a0news providers to educate the public about polio in Pakistan and eradication efforts.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Social Media: Facebook and Twitter<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplyzesty.com\/social-media\/big-changes-coming-to-facebooks-advertising-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-435 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/facebook-logo--150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/facebook-logo--150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/facebook-logo-.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Social media sites are hugely popular in the United States with an estimated 750,000,000 individuals visiting Facebook every month\u00a0(eBizMBA, 2012).<\/p>\n<p>Facebook is widely used by health organizations, some of which are fighting polio in Pakistan. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/172917472784836\/\" target=\"_blank\">Make Pakistan Polio Free<\/a>\u00a0is a group on Facebook that brings people together who are interested in eradicating polio from Pakistan. They have attracted 820 members as of 10 April 2012, any of whom may\u00a0publicly\u00a0post on their wall. Members post semi-regularly on a variety of topics including fundraisers, news articles, or relative blog posts. This group is\u00a0effectively\u00a0a forum for news and medial\u00a0updates relative to polio in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/End-Polio-Now-Pakistan-Chapter\/238247662878731\" target=\"_blank\">The Pakistan Chapter of End Polio Now<\/a> has 74 fans on 10 April 2012. They use their page to alert fans to new photos, events, international holidays such as World Rotary Day on February 23 and World Polio Day on October 24, and political events related to polio. They are part of the larger nonprofit organization, End Polio Now, that uses its facebook to fundraise. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/End-Polio-Now\/78976274836\" target=\"_blank\">End Polio Now<\/a> has over 13,000 likes gives it access to a much greater number of facebook users and interested individuals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.courtneyluv.com\/courtneyluv-com-wishes-twitter-a-happy-5th-birthday\/twitter-logo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-434 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/twitter-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Twitter, another social networking site that allows its users to update their status and \u2018tag\u2019\u00a0their posts according to subject matter, boasts 250,000,000 individual visitors every month (eBizMBA, 2012).<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalhealthhub.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Health Hub<\/a>\u2019s twitter account, one can see all of Global Health Hub\u2019s posts. On 15 March 2010, they posted \u201cPolio transmission continues on Pakistan-Afghanistan border <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/UDfvzgF7\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/xzhlfG<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/search\/%23globalhealth\">#globalhealth<\/a>.\u201d By going to the website included in the post, you can see a one sentence update of polio in Pakistan, \u201cPakistani virologists have mapped the genetic structure of polioviruses along the violent Afghan-Pakistan border\u201d (SciDev.net, 2012). This simple post alerts readers to scientific advancements being made along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Global Health Hub\u2019s twitter account, therefore, provides short and informative updates to those who follow them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/unicef_pakistan\" target=\"_blank\">UNICEF Pakistan<\/a>\u00a0used Twitter to alert residents about vaccination campaigns. On March 14, 2012, they tweeted<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-08-at-9.54.10-PM1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-601\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-08-at-9.54.10-PM1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-08-at-9.54.10-PM1.jpg 604w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-08-at-9.54.10-PM1-300x80.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By tagging #pakistan and #polio, UNICEF had their post show up on both respective feeds. The post was also \u201cretweeted\u201d seven times, meaning seven people reposted the update.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF Pakistan also tweeted on March 12, 2012:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-08-at-9.54.34-PM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-602\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-08-at-9.54.34-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"606\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-08-at-9.54.34-PM.jpg 606w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-08-at-9.54.34-PM-300x81.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>on 12 March 2012. Four people retweeted the post, therefore increasing the number of people who would see it. UNICEF Pakistan used Twitter to educate people about the only method of preventing polio: vaccination. In addition to providing news, social media sites can provide important and lifesaving information.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Photoblogs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">If a picture is worth a thousand words, what is a photoblog worth? MSNBC.com, a US based news source with a largely US-American audience, uses photojournalism to spark conversations.\u00a0On March 12, 2012, the news source published a photo essay containing three pictures from <a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2012\/03\/12\/10654384-pakistan-distributes-polio-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\">anti-polio campaigns in Pakistan<\/a>. MSNBC\u2019s users shared visual publications they appreciated and found worthy through social media, extending the community exposed to them.<\/p>\n<p>On July 6, 2011,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.msnbc.msn.com\/?nvo=3700\" target=\"_blank\">MSNBC<\/a>\u00a0published a single photo on its photoblog site that also addresses polio in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 477px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.msnbc.msn.com\/?nvo=3700\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/lZMFON_WL7IuH3x5iX-1PPSEdAgSSQ8vlIjCoEl0UrgS3LG8eAoDD8k37IS2qr3pNrAAahhxgz21OkWnwdkAi3fgCUrZG5gEjgwFbxtSuWnFLo2p0vA\" alt=\"\" width=\"467px;\" height=\"312px;\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cA Pakistani man wheels a child, Jamshid, 8, who suffers from polio on the outskirts of the capital Islamabad on July 6, 2011. According to the World Health organization (WHO) Pakistan tops the list of four countries where the polio disease still exists despite the global campaign to get rid of it. The other three countries are Nigeria, India and Afghanistan. Pakistan has been declared &quot;polio endemic state&quot; as 57 more polio cases were reported between January 2011 to June 2011.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Click <a title=\"MSNBC Photoblog\" href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/msnbc-photoblog\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0for analysis.<\/p>\n<p>By 19 April 2012, the photo was recommended by 90 individuals on facebook and was tweeted about by 26 people on Twitter. It was shared through other means such as email, stumbleupon, digg, etc. by an additional three people, extending the viewership of the original publication.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.immunize.org\/polioinpakistan.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-717    alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-10-at-9.19.45-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-10-at-9.19.45-PM.jpg 519w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2012-04-10-at-9.19.45-PM-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.immunize.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Immunization Action Coalition<\/a>\u00a0(2012) is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Minnesota. Their mission statement is \u201cto increase immunization rates and prevent disease by creating and distributing educational materials for health professionals and the public that enhance the delivery of safe and effective immunization services. The Coalition also facilitates communication about the safety, efficacy, and use of vaccines within the broad immunization community of patients, parents, health care organizations, and government health agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization featured vaccination campaigns in Pakistan through a photoblog consisting of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.immunize.org\/polioinpakistan.htm\" target=\"_blank\">nine photos and short captions<\/a>.\u00a0Click <a title=\"Immunization Action Coalition Photoblog\" href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/immunization-action-coalition-photoblog\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for a summary and analysis of photos and captions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Public Campaigns: Billboards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The following picture of a billboard was taken outside Avari Hotel in Karachi, Pakistan. Those who see the billboard are alerted to the issue of polio in Pakistan and the rights of children to be polio-free. It also lets residents know when immunizations will take place. This billboard shows that the sponsoring organizations, listed at the bottom, are fighting polio and that it is parents\u2019 responsibility to give their child a polio-free life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rotary3270.org\/polio-awareness-campaign-389\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/TM22emiBFzr4dsoc0vUa_4TmG759-CvabdrXF0i6UFbNI3gJWFFl-gsJkggVAZTTO1Stu_ObETyiHUmY-JlFhxQrC5YGlF7RoOdWbiqshTO8wKmQ27g\" alt=\"\" width=\"400px;\" height=\"300px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Comics<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sovereign Pakistan, an online blog published in both English and Arabic, posted the following comics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sp1947.blogspot.com\/2011\/01\/pakistani-newspapers-cartoons-on_31.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/8M8jwK82DJAxw36qw4ec15nhoqih9XWLYVX7W_oWVGiQtDePhI9l3J7V9RwrCwJ0i0PYkCUq5RuZXiGDmZw2Foeb98QKQBtfHtxoyPyKHSQwhMRTRFo\" alt=\"\" width=\"NaN\" height=\"NaN\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Click <a title=\"Comic\" href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/comic\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for an analysis of the cartoon pictured above.<\/p>\n<p>The following comic was drawn by the same cartoonist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sp1947.blogspot.com\/2011\/02\/pakistani-newspapers-cartoons-on_04.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/4sVMTMoZqBbIb3Gi2hCMwQ1liCWFKlm7kTZDq9o5tAKiT1auAwJayAaGb4YmaqmXnrCopDNz7KynwwXYqCLFEgjWVK9RfomGchXotmeUBy68wCCG6GA\" alt=\"\" width=\"NaN\" height=\"NaN\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">What do you think the artist is implying through this comic? Compare the size and location of the two figures, as well as the physical relationship between the two. Why is the health department worker reacting the way he is to the health worker&#8217;s kick?<\/p>\n<p>By creating one picture with limited words, the artist is able to convey political commentary on the anti-polio campaign and those involved. The reader was able to learn about some of the issues in the campaign and the artist\u2019s position by simply looking at a drawing. For those short on time, comics can be a great way to learn about the issues and opinions of those who may be more informed.<\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>The following chart compares the three main categories covered in this section: social media in Pakistan, social media by foreign sources, and foreign photoblogs.
