Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To analyze the news coverage of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, we chose news sources from 4 geographic locations.\u00a0 We studied CNN\u2019s coverage of the bill in the US and BBC\/Belfast Telegraph\u2019s coverage in the UK because of the U.S. and UK\u2019s threat to cut aid.\u00a0 We also chose to discuss Nigerian Punch Newspaper\/ ThisDay\u2019s coverage in Nigeria and New Vision\u2019s coverage in Uganda to look at countries that have already outlawed homosexuality.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Two Sides<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-02-at-6.14.28-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2898\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-02-at-6.14.28-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-02-at-6.24.11-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2899\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-02-at-6.24.11-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Pro-rights<\/strong><br \/>\nThere is not a lot of variety in the opinions of those supporting LGBTQ rights.\u00a0 They firmly believe the LGBTQ community deserves to be treated equally and that their members in no way deserve punishment for their sexual orientation.\u00a0 They counter the belief that being gay is a choice and that it is something the Western world has brought to Africa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Anti-homosexuality<\/strong><br \/>\nThose in support of the bill believe that homosexuality is unnatural and &#8220;unafrican,&#8221; that it was brought from the West and is spreading into their country.\u00a0 They claim it goes against their family values and is something from which they need to protect their children.\u00a0 Organizations like UNICEF are accused of trying to recruit children to homosexuality through their involvement in the school system.\u00a0 Allegations of organizations include distributing educational materials supposedly promoting homosexuality and recruiters bribing students to change their sexual orientation.\u00a0 Those against homosexuality also view it as counter to their Christian faith.\u00a0 They also argue against international countries&#8217; involvement in Ugandan legislation, claiming Uganda is a democracy and does not need the influence of foreign powers to pass laws.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>News Sources<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>USA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/WORLD\/africa\/01\/29\/uganda.gay.activist.funeral\/index.html?iref=allsearch<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>United Kingdom<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/labourlist.org\/2011\/11\/shame-on-you-bbc\/bbc-logo\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-859\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/04\/bbc-logo-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"102\" 619w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The UK sources incorporated the prominent role religious leaders have played in the discussion of the bill and included interviews href=\"http:\/\/www.punchng.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2902\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-02-at-6.35.25-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"182\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisdayonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These Nigerian sources (Nigeria Punch Newspaper and ThisDay) did not write in support of the bill as one may have assumed.\u00a0 Instead, they pointed out the lack of support for the bill in the Ugandan government and suggested Bahati may revise the bill to make it more lenient.<br \/>\nexamples: <a target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.punchng.com\/news\/africa\/african-leaders-must-respect-gay-rights-ban\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Uganda<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newvision.co.ug\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2904\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-02-at-6.45.45-AM.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This source gave insight into the belief that human rights organizations are promoting homosexuality and targeting children.\u00a0 It also acknowledged the importance of religious leaders, discussing the power dynamics amongst bishops.\u00a0 The authors of these articles quoted anti-homosexuality opinions, but did not seem to adopt it.<br \/>\nexamples: <a target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.newvision.co.ug\/D\/8\/12\/675619<\/a><\/p>\n<p>*We attempted to find Middle Eastern commentary on the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, but our search of Al Jazeera, Al Hayat, and Al Arabiya only produced one article on the topic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>YouTube<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2905\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-02-at-6.49.50-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"70\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was a plethora of videos on the bill, both pro and anti-homosexuality present on YouTube.\u00a0 Click the links below to watch a few underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ugandapicks.com\/2012\/04\/president-museveni-to-leave-power-in-2016-2016.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2975 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/05\/President-Museveni-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"93\" height=\"60\" \/><\/a><\/span> <strong>President Yoweri Museveni<\/strong> of Uganda has expressed his firm stance against homosexuality.\u00a0 However, he has been reported by BBC in 2011 as pulling away from the bill, refusing to fully support it.\u00a0 href=\"http:\/\/lezgetreal.com\/2010\/08\/ugandas-david-bahati-admits-he-wants-to-kill-every-last-gay-person\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2974 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/contemporary-issues\/files\/2012\/05\/bahati-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"67\" \/><\/a><\/span> <strong>David Bahati<\/strong> is the Ugandan member of Parliament who created the Anti-Homosexuality Bill.\u00a0 He is very open about his disapproval of homosexuality and his Christian beliefs.\u00a0 For an interview with him click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weinformers.net\/2011\/03\/15\/ethics-and-integrity-minister-dr-james-nsaba-buturo-resigns\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2973
