{"id":334,"date":"2011-01-31T13:00:34","date_gmt":"2011-01-31T17:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/?p=334"},"modified":"2011-01-31T13:02:37","modified_gmt":"2011-01-31T17:02:37","slug":"halfway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/2011\/01\/31\/halfway\/","title":{"rendered":"Halfway"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_335\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/wildlife.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-335\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-335\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/wildlife-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/wildlife-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/wildlife.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Searching for penguins<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Saturday marked the halfway point of our cruise.\u00a0 In two more days we\u2019ll be at the southernmost station of our trip, and then we\u2019ll alter our course onto a two-week long diagonal towards South Africa, our ultimate destination.\u00a0 We have left the warm weather behind us, and are now in weather more comparable to that that which friends and family at home in the Northeast are currently experiencing.\u00a0 Temperatures are around 40\u02daF (so it\u2019s a bit warmer than Maine) and the sky has mostly been gray and overcast with occasional showers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/watching.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-336\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/watching-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/watching-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/watching-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/watching.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>On Saturday I was acting as bottle cop (a role that Whitney described in an earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/2011\/01\/20\/sampling-at-sea-everyone-must-obey-the-bottle-cop\/\">post<\/a>) in the hangar on the main deck when the Chief Engineer came outside.\u00a0 He approached me and asked, \u201cYou\u2019re doing good? No drugs?\u201d\u00a0 I told him I wasn\u2019t currently taking the coast guard cocktail.\u00a0 He responded, \u201cYou\u2019re not a landlubber anymore.\u201d\u00a0 Hearing this on the day marking the halfway point of the trip made me feel a certain sense of accomplishment and confidence in my sea legs.\u00a0 He then proceeded to secure the stack of plastic Adirondack chairs in the hangar to the wall so the ship\u2019s rolling didn\u2019t send them tumbling onto us as we collected samples from the CTD.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_337\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/South-Georgia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-337\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-337\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/South-Georgia-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/South-Georgia-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/South-Georgia.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">South Georgia Island<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yesterday the sea was calmer than on Saturday, and we passed the island of South Georgia just after dinnertime.\u00a0 Because of foggy conditions, we could only see the outline of the island\u2019s glacial peaks, but it was still exciting to see land for the first time in three weeks!\u00a0 Many seals and penguins kept us company all day swimming and jumping out of the water next to the ship.\u00a0 Sights like these add some excitement to the fairly routine schedule aboard the Melville.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_338\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/CTD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-338\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-338\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/CTD-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/CTD-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/colbyatsea\/files\/2011\/01\/CTD.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-338\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martin and Raul on the taglines<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I feel I have really gotten into the rhythm of life at sea.\u00a0 It\u2019s funny how everyone is on a unique schedule, so when I\u2019m in the messhall getting a midnight snack before bed, one of the mates may walk in and say \u201cGood Morning.\u201d\u00a0 And when I begin my working shift at 1400, and greet one of the people on my research team with a \u201cGood morning Bruce,\u201d he often has to remind me, \u201cGoodnight Bruce\u201d before heading off to bed.\u00a0 Interactions like this happen pretty regularly.\u00a0 In the past few weeks, deployments, sampling, filtering and data analysis have all become more fluid and efficient\u2014they\u2019re parts of the rhythm of life at sea to which I am becoming accustomed.<\/p>\n<p>-Annie<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday marked the halfway point of our cruise.\u00a0 In two more days we\u2019ll be at the southernmost station of our trip, and then we\u2019ll alter our course onto a two-week long diagonal towards South Africa, our ultimate destination.\u00a0 We have &hellip;
