Chester Wood committed to work for SVM when he was at Colby as an active member of YMCA. When he was about to go to China in 1920, the administrator from the volunteer board sent a letter to his fierence, Dorothy, to mention the notices before going to China and the preparation of lugguagues. While Wood was a student at Newton that he met Dorothy. She had graduated from Jackson and was doing social work at a settlement house in the West End of Boston. They were eventually married in August of 1920 in the First Baptist Church of Marblehead. They had already been accepted as missionaries by the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society and were assigned to West China.When Wood sailed to China from Vancouver, Canada, it was already the second time for Dorothy to do so. After they arrived at Shanghai, They spent some time learning the language and the proceeded to go to western China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The living environment was harsh there, but Chester Wood enjoyed his stay and travelled a lot. He did many hikings and visited different churches, including temples in China, to study buddhism and Chinese Christianity. He was amazed by the creativity by Chinese people and enjoyed having connections with locals, and he recorded what he saw by delicate sketches on some notes. He had his children born in China, and he spent time with his family exploring China and dedicating their work in missionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
