A golfer who just returned from Shanghai showed him photographs of young Communists being executed in the aftermath of Chiang Kai-shek&#8217;s purge in that year, commonly known as the &#8220;412 Shanghai Massacre.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/5\/52\/Communists_Being_Arrested_in_the_Shanghai_Massacre.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:640px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Communists being rounded up during the purges, Shanghai, 1927<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">The photographs lodged permanently in his memory, recurring throughout his life as a haunting symbol of China&#8217;s pain and tragedy. He could not have known then that many of the survivors of that same massacre \u2014 Zhou Enlai among them, who had narrowly escaped with his life \u2014 would one day be his interview subjects in a cave city on the edge of the Gobi Desert.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">By age fifteen, he was already an intern reporter working for the <em>Waterville Morning Sentinel<\/em>. <br><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cLike a scar on my subconscious.\u201d \u201cThe pain, the drama, and the tragedy of China\u201d.
