Mills was instrumental in introducing Lee to Colby, recognizing his academic promise and advocating on his behalf. Through Mills’ recommendation and encouragement, Lee was connected to the college’s admissions network at a time when such personal sponsorship could open doors for talented students whose backgrounds or resources might otherwise limit their access to a liberal arts education.

Upon arriving in Waterville, John Lee was embraced by the generosity of the local community. Several Waterville families, committed to supporting Colby’s mission and its students, extended their hospitality to Lee. These families played a vital role in helping him adjust to life in Maine, far from his original home. Their assistance ranged from hosting him in their homes to offering mentorship and friendship—a demonstration of the close-knit relationship between Colby College and the residents of Waterville. This network provided Lee with a home-away-from-home and helped ensure a supportive environment during his formative college years.

John Lee enrolled at Colby in 1949 and, over the next four years, immersed himself in both academic and campus life. He chose to major in History and Government, two disciplines that benefited from Colby’s strong programs and dedicated faculty. The college’s liberal arts approach exposed him to a broad spectrum of ideas and rigorous learning, enabling him to develop not only critical thinking skills but also a nuanced understanding of society and politics. His studies were enriched by the encouragement of professors and the bonds formed with fellow students, many of whom would remain lifelong friends. By the time Lee graduated in 1953, he had built a lasting intellectual foundation and created meaningful memories that reflected the true spirit of Colby College.

During his time at Colby College in the early 1950s, John Lee, Class of 1953, was a prominent figure in campus speech and debate activities. His achievements in oratory placed him alongside other notable Colby students and showcased his talent and dedication to public speaking.

John Lee’s campus involvement went beyond public speaking: in 1952, he was elected President of the International Relations Club (IRC), underlining his leadership and commitment to fostering dialogue on global affairs at Colby.
