After graduating from Colby in 1953, John Lee pursued a distinguished academic and professional career. He became a professor of history and eventually chair of the department of social sciences at Northwestern Connecticut Community College in Winsted, Connecticut. In addition to his teaching and administrative duties, Lee was actively engaged in advanced studies, working toward a Ph.D. at New York University. By the mid-1970s, he had completed his course work and comprehensive exams and was writing a dissertation focused on the China missions of General A. C. Wedemeyer, who succeeded General Stilwell in 1944\u2014a topic that reflected both his personal background and scholarly interests in modern China and Sino-American relations, particularly in the context of national security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside of the classroom, Lee was also recognized for his involvement in multiple study projects and for being a frequent speaker, including participating on a notable panel with New York Times journalist Harrison Salisbury at the Hotchkiss School. In his personal life, Lee married Edith Milton-Lee, a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Connecticut, and together they raised a blended family of six children. In addition to his demanding professional and academic commitments, Lee found time for public service: he served as a major on active duty with the U.S. Army at the Pentagon during a summer in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
