Raised in missionary schools and internationally connected universities in Republican China, John developed a fluency in English and familiarity with American culture that distinguished him from many of his generation. These experiences eventually led to a chance encounter with\u00a0Peter Mills, a U.S. Navy officer whose mentorship would profoundly shape the course of his life. Yet John\u2019s educational journey also unfolded during the final years of the\u00a0Chinese Civil War, as growing political instability forced many young Chinese intellectuals to reconsider their futures.
