John B.Y. Lee was born in Shantung in 1906 into a family shaped by both Buddhist tradition and the growing influence of Christianity in early twentieth-century China. While John Lee\u2019s paternal grandparents were Buddhists, his grandmother later converted to Methodism, reflecting the religious and cultural transformations taking place during the Republican era. John B.Y. Lee attended Shanghai University (\u6caa\u6c5f\u5927\u5b66), a missionary university founded by the American Baptist Mission Board that became known for its English-language education and international outlook. Like many ambitious young Chinese intellectuals of his generation, he was deeply connected to both Chinese and Western worlds. However, the family lost much of its wealth during the 1929 stock market crash, forcing him to rebuild financially during a turbulent period in modern Chinese history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 1934, after relocating the family to Beijing, then commonly called Peiping, John B.Y. Lee had successfully reestablished himself through the entertainment industry. He became the North China general manager and Chinese distributor for Universal Pictures, while also owning several movie theaters in Peiping and a nightclub in nearby Tientsin. These photographs include his Chinese and English business cards for Universal Pictures, materials that reflect both the international reach of American cinema in Republican China and the cosmopolitan world the Lee family inhabited. Family photographs from this period show a household marked by relative prosperity, complete with servants, a cook, and close engagement with urban cultural life in North China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For John Lee, growing up in his father\u2019s theaters became an education of its own. He watched American films constantly, not as formal study, but simply as part of everyday life. Over time, the movies gave him an ear for spoken English and a familiarity with American culture that distinguished him from many of his peers. He attended the Sacred Heart School, a Catholic kindergarten run by French nuns, before later studying at the Peiping American School and Yuying Academy. This unusual combination of Chinese upbringing and immersion in American popular culture would later become life-changing. In December 1945, when U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Peter Mills visited Yuying Academy to speak about his wartime experiences, the school librarian who was supposed to interpret fell ill, and John was unexpectedly asked to translate the lecture himself. The encounter marked the beginning of a friendship that would eventually lead him to Colby College and permanently alter the course of his life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
