I am currently undeclared but working towards Computer Science and Math Science majors. Although I\u2019m not currently planning a career in science, I am considering teaching and I have a strong interest in chemistry.\u00a0 This course gave me a wonderful glimpse into the world of teaching and I had a wonderful time experimenting with ways to help students learn effectively and to have fun while doing so.<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_2871-e1391128508489.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-134 alignright\" alt=\"IMG_2871\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_2871-e1391128508489-216x300.jpg\" width=\"173\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_2871-e1391128508489-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_2871-e1391128508489-740x1024.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had three experiments.\u00a0 The first was the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Finding Nemo Density Column<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/Nemo-Teacher-Kit.doc\">Nemo Teacher Kit<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/Nemo-Student-Worksheet.doc\">Nemo Student Worksheet<\/a>)<\/span>.\u00a0 The idea with this one was to teach kids about density and can easily be done in an hour with a group of 4<sup>th<\/sup> or 5<sup>th<\/sup> grades.\u00a0 The second experiment was <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">How Music Works: An Introduction to Sound Waves and Vibrations<\/span><\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/Music.doc\">Music and Vibrations Teacher Kit<\/a>).\u00a0 This was more of a physics experiment and taught kids about sound, vibrations, and energy.\u00a0 This is fun for all ages but can be gone further in depth with 4th graders and up.\u00a0 The third experiment was <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Mystery Mixtures<\/span><\/strong> (l<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/Mystery-Mixture-Teacher-Kit-.doc\">Mystery Mixture Teacher Kit<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/Mystery-Mixture-Student-Worksheet.doc\">Mystery Mixture Student Worksheet<\/a>).\u00a0 The concept of this one was for students to use methods of separation to <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_2936.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-110\" alt=\"IMG_2936\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_2936-300x225.jpg\" width=\"243\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_2936-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/ch151\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_2936-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a>separate a mixture and then use tests and unique characteristics to identify what was in the mixture.\u00a0 I adapted this one when I was in the lab the final week to use flammability, pH, and more advanced chemical reactions because I was in a safe location and had fewer students with me.\u00a0 I had an absolutely blast during this class and I enjoyed the unpredictable nature of children and found this experience to be very rewarding.\u00a0 I hope that the children got as much out of it as I did.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m Kellen McDonnell and I am a freshman at Colby.
