The most common paratexts that are present are the table of contents, introduction, printed marginallia as well as an advertisement.

In the very front of the book is an advertisement that was put in by a vendor who was selling this early addition. Although it is unknown who this vendor is I am able to make the assumption that this was added in due to the fact that this summary of the book is lightly pasted in. Perhaps this was needed in order to help sell this book or maybe it helped the common person understand what they were looking at considering its a more difficult religious text. With that being said, this copy is an earlier addition so it may be more likely added in to help attract readers gain more interest in the text itself. Along with this, it mentions what parts of the book were currently missing as well as the parts that had been canceled.

The next thing that is an addition to this text that is extremely necessary is the table of contents in the back of the book. Like I said previously, this a religious text which means it can be very difficult at times for the average person to understand what they are reading as well as the different portions of the book. This table of contents allows the users to find the different passages and readings that they are looking for. Another thing that I find rather interesting about having a table of contents is that it can many times be used for a point of reference. For the most part, the everyday reading novel will not have a table of contents present and this suggests that it is meant to be used in order to navigate the text. This table of contents is broken down into five different parts that all have numerous readings within them. For example the first section is titled Letters of Robert Smith and within that section there are three different letters present all written by Robert Smith.

One of the additions that sticks out the most are the printed marginalia that are present on pretty much every single page. In the case of my book the printed marginalia that is present is used as a reference to the Bible. Due to the fact that it is a religious text the best way to make an argument to their reader is by directly correlating what is being said within the text with a passage or verse from the Bible. For example, one of the many references within the text is “Cor.5”. This means that in the Bible you would need to find the Corinthians book and in that book you should be reading the fifth chapter. This addition shows me that the person reading this book will many times be reading due to their religious beliefs or for educational purposes. With these scattered throughout the marginalia I would assume most of the people reading this would have access to a Bible in order to read the connecting passages.

The last thing that is present in my book is the introduction that is in the very front right after the advertisement. Unfortunately, I was unable to photograph the introduction page that introduces to the reader what they are going to be reading as they go through the book. At first I was unsure why there would need to be an introduction page for this book but then I realized that it is extremely necessary. This book is rather tough to read and you need to have some knowledge of the bible or a bible on hand to understand the vast references made throughout. With that being said, an introduction page can help readers understand a little better what to expect before diving in head first without any prior knowledge.

My book titled, Certain most godly, fruitful, and comfortable letters of such true saintes and holy martyrs of God, as in the late bloodye persecution here within this realme, gaue their lyues for the defence of Christes holy gospel: written in the tyme of theyr affliction and cruell imprysonment, displays a vast amount of paratext […]

[1
