I never really understood why the body heats up so much when I\u2019m sick. After going through how the ETC works, especially how it creates the proton gradient to make ATP, I finally understand what\u2019s happening during a fever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One thing that made sense to me was how the immune system ramps up its activity when you\u2019re fighting an infection. Immune cells need a lot of energy to divide, travel through the body, and release signals that help attack viruses. Under normal conditions, the ETC uses the proton gradient to power ATP synthase. But when the ETC is running at a faster pace to respond to the high energy demand, it becomes a bit less efficient, and some of the energy that would normally go into ATP gets released as heat instead by uncouplers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If more energy is going toward heat instead of ATP, it makes sense that my body has less energy left over for normal activities. What I used to just think of as \u201cfeeling warm and no power\u201d is really a sign that my cells are working harder than usual to help fight off an infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even though the ETC was just one section of our class, learning about it made a common experience\u2014getting a fever\u2014feel a lot more understandable and connected to real biochemistry happening inside my cells.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When we learned about the electron transport chain (ETC), I started thinking about something I deal with pretty often: getting fevers.
