I vividly remember when he \u201cbroke the news\u201d to me; I could tell he was scared, and it was one of the most emotional states I have ever seen him in. Despite my interest in the medical field, I do not come from a family of doctors. For my dad, understanding his condition and navigating maintenance plans would be a challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In our first lecture on glycogen, I remember feeling inspired to learn more about the material so that I could help my dad understand the inner workings of his body, at the cellular level. I was even reminded of him in the case study of the patient who only eats carbohydrates but claims he\u2019s eating well since he\u2019s \u201cnot eating sugar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the Unit 2 content, I can explain to my dad that his body has developed insulin resistance, so the cells cannot properly take in glucose. Blood glucose remains high and the pancreas eventually cannot keep up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This reflection has taught me that there is more to memorizing pathways &#8211; understanding the complexities can translate to real experiences by comforting those who are affected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the past year, my father was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
