I was previously aware that T1D is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the pancreatic cells that produce insulin. Now, I understand why this is so detrimental to glucose regulation. Without insulin, glucose cannot efficiently enter cells, leading to elevated blood sugar and preventing glucose storage as glycogen. I now see why it\u2019s so important for her to track carbohydrates and administer insulin after meals so that she can mimic normal insulin release and prevent hyperglycemia. Learning about glycogen synthesis and breakdown also clarified what happens when her blood sugar drops too low. Normally, when glucose levels fall, the pancreas releases glucagon, signaling the liver to break down glycogen into glucose. But due to her T1D, her body\u2019s glucagon response is impaired so blood sugar can continue to decrease, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. I also wonder if she has ever taken a glucose challenge test. I now know that her results would be a blood sugar level that remains high because insulin does not signal for glucose uptake and storage, whereas normally, the liver should take up blood sugar, store it as glycogen, and restore the blood sugar level.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A friend of mine from home has Type 1 Diabetes, and learning about metabolic disorders and glucose homeostasis has deepened my understanding of what she experiences daily.
