The years since the last edition of the Lexicon <\/em>have been witness to many argumentation conferences, quite a few issues of journals dedicated to topics in argumentation theory, a veritable library of important texts and anthologies, and, of course, a stampede of arguments. Whether or not years are the sort of things that can witness arguments \u2013\u00a0or , for that matter, whether arguments are the sort of things that can be witnessed at all \u2013 the language of argumentation theory keeps growing. So, even though no one asked for it, we humbly offer this update of what has become a completely dispensable resource.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/em>Preface to the 2nd<\/sup> edition<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The technical language of argumentation theory is no less lively than its subject \u2013 and just as contested, contentious, and confounding. In the years since the publication of The Arguer\u2019s Lexicon<\/em>, there has been a veritable tindale wave <\/em>of new terms. All this change threatens to leave old fogelins <\/em>behind, but even the youngest iankidds <\/em>can feel lost in the oswald <\/em>at times.<\/p>\n

On one side of the Atlantic, FECA \u2013 the First European Conference on Argumentation \u2013 generated a pile of FECAL matter in need of treatment. The Canadian-American Conferences on Argumentation on the other side were not to be outdone: the CACA output was equally impressive. Scores of new terms clamored for inclusion, and dozens of existing terms cried out for revision.<\/p>\n

Thus, the Council on Rhetoric, Argumentation, and Philosophy has taken the bold decision to ignore public opinion and provide an update to The Arguer\u2019s Lexicon<\/em>. For wholly brandom <\/em>reasons, the first edition was given only a sosa <\/em>reception. Nevertheless, we firmly believe its publication remains a john-stone <\/em>in the history of argumentation theory, olmos <\/em>an aristurtle <\/em>of modern theory, even if it didn\u2019t make a dima\u2019s <\/em>worth of difference in the public imagination.<\/p>\n

The editors would like to take this opportunity first, to welcome the newest members of the Council: Anne, Kip, Reb, Piet, Tuq and Rhees. Second, we would like to thank the biros<\/em> already on the Council for their hands-off policy. They have been very hamby <\/em>as we have tried to culitvate our goddens, <\/em>to facione <\/em>maps of the Woods<\/em>, and to wenzel <\/em>our way to lumer-ation<\/em>. Third, we would like to thank the growing list of contributing editors who, while anonymous for reasons of personal safety, are hereby given the public acknowledgement they deserve.<\/p>\n

The language of argumentation is replete with technical terms \u2013 and the list keeps growing. To be conversant in the field, it is no longer enough simply to know about standpoints and stages, backing and warrant, dialectical tiers, dialogue games, and argument schemes. Today\u2019s argumentation theorists also need to be able to tell their ennis <\/em>from a hoaglund<\/em>. What does it mean when you are told that your argument could still use some fogelin\u2019 <\/em>around the edges, that it\u2019s too kauf-filled<\/em>, or that there are not enough gilberts<\/em>? Is it good to be told your arguments are very hansen <\/em>or quite zarefsky<\/em>? Is a krabbe <\/em>dangerous? And what is a tony-blair<\/em>? No one wants the embarrassment of not even knowing what it means to be charged with being lost in the Woods<\/em> without a walton map<\/em>. Argumentation can be a pretty finocchiaro <\/em>business.<\/p>\n

Because the technical vocabulary of argumentation is so highly developed, but also so rapidly evolving, it was thought that a glossary of contemporary terms of art might be a useful and welcome addition to our argumentation libraries. Herewith, then, on the occasion of the 9th<\/sup> OSSA conference, we call for the garssen <\/em>to bring us a pint of christin\u2019d ale<\/em> so we may toast the Frans of Argument <\/em>as we present this lexicon as a true govier <\/em>of the seriousness of the situation.<\/p>\n

Formal apologies are extended in advance to all those who are offended by the definitions of any of these terms. And sincere <\/em>apologies are also extended to those who are not<\/em> offended by their definitions. Finally, we offer rhetorical<\/em> apologies to those who would have liked to have been offended but were omitted. The choice of terms was restricted by the limited imaginations of the editors. However, since argumentation theory is a vital and ongoing project with a constantly evolving language, suggestions for additions and revisions for possible future editions would be welcome, because this is, after all, just a ralph <\/em>draft.<\/p>\n

aberdein<\/strong> \u2013 interjection. Scottish euphemism for \u201cI\u2019ll be damned!\u201d \u201cWell, aberdein!\u00a0 There\u2019s some virtue in that argument after all<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

adle<\/strong> \u2013 v<\/em>. To commit a category mistake in the attempt at justification, e.g., by an appeal to ethics in epistemology or an appeal to epistemology in ethics. Hence, adled, adj<\/em>, with confused justification; and adler, n. one who adles.<\/p>\n

agnes<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0adj<\/em>. With a disarming smile. n. agnesity. Pleasantry as a rhetorical strategy. \u201cWhen dealing with a hostile crowd, agnesity is the best policy<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

aikin<\/strong> \u2013 gerund<\/em>. How one feels after doing battle with an iron man. \u201cThe effort required to make sense of Scott\u2019s argument left me aikin<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

amossy<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. The temporary inability to remember clich\u00e9s. \u201cWe were arguing about clich\u00e9s as cognitive heuristics when I came down with a case of amossy and absent-mindedly forgot the stereotype for professors<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

anscombre<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. The smallest unit length of an enunciation; hence, the smallest swerve in the direction of an argument. 1,000 anscombres = 1 ducrot.<\/p>\n

aristurtle<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. The ancient creature upon whose back the whole world of argumentation theory rests. Distinguished by its quint-essentially impenetrable shell, it is reputedly the Ur-source for all wisdom.<\/p>\n

auch<\/strong> \u2013 interjection<\/em>. A dismissive response to an argument. \u201cAuch! So much hype and so little substance!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

austintatious<\/strong> \u2013 adj<\/em>. Displaying a fine sense for the niceties of language. “I’m not sure what his point was, but his presentation was certainly austintatious<\/em>.\u201d[Definition from The Philosophical Lexicon]<\/p>\n

B<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

baehr<\/strong> \u2013 v<\/em>. To entertain hypotheses and provisional standpoints patiently and tolerantly, regardless of how foolish or offensive they may be. \u201cThe art of pedagogy requires that we baehr even the stupidest student contributions to class discussions with grice and agnesity<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

bailin\u2019 & battersby<\/strong> \u2013 A \u201cdialectical\u201d (i.e., good cop\/bad cop) method for teaching critical thinking. \u201cIf the fun and games of ennis matches aren\u2019t effective, you might have to resort to some bailin\u2019 and battersby to get your students up to speed<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

bartgarssen<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/strong>. A virtuoso display of strategic maneuvering. \u201cWe followed the P-D rules faithfully but we still argued our way into a corina. It\u2019ll take a bartgarssen to get out it<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

battaly<\/strong> \u2013 adv<\/em>. Virtuously but vainly combative. \u201cHeather argued battaly against the patriarchy<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

baumtrog<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. Cousin to the balrog, this deceptively imposing beast is actually quite open to persuasion.<\/p>\n

benthem<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0v<\/em>. To extend the range of application of a theory by stretching its boundaries, hence the informal logician\u2019s motto: \u201c\u2019Tis wiser to benthem in argument than break in proof<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

bermejo-luque<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. Inexplicably effective rhetorical practice. \u201cI don\u2019t know what happened. We were poised to win the committee\u2019s approval until the chair pulled off a last minute bermejo-luque.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

bex<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0n.<\/em> The formalizable and computational components of argumentation. \u201cInformal logic requires thinking outside the bex<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

biro<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0n<\/em>. The invisible friend of an imaginary rabbit (or the imaginary friend of an invisible rabbit). \u201cShe said she got her argument from her \u2018friend\u2019 Harvey but we think it might be from a biro<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

blair<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0n<\/em>. The domesticated hybrid of a wolverine and a Canadian grizzly, very popular as a cuddly, stuffed animal. \u201cTony-blairs, with their pre-programmed arguments, are even outselling teddy-blairs this year.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

boger-man<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0n<\/em>. A scholar-archaeologist obsessed with finding the One True Aristurtle. \u201cThere\u2019s some Indiana Jones in every boger-man<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

bondy<\/strong> \u2013 n.<\/em> The situation one puts oneself by trying to think about how to go about thinking about thinking. \u201cPatrick\u2019s unvirtuous thoughts about virtuous thinking put him in a double-bondy<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

botting<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0n<\/em>. The functional foundations of reasonableness, esp. in the idiom \u2018rock botting.\u2019 \u201cWhen David insisted that the only way to resolve our dispute was to be \u2018reasonable\u2019 \u2013 i.e., agree with him \u2013\u00a0we realized that he had hit rock botting<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

C<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

cam-polo<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0n<\/em>. The sport of tele-viewing deep disagreements.<\/p>\n

carozza<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. Someone who spices up bexed-in, formal logical reasoning with exuberant and emotional argumentation. \u201cWhat a delightful argument \u2013 wine flowed, gilberts piled up, and we ended up laughing, crying, and carozzing the whole night away!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

casey<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0adj<\/em>. Random, tending towards the irrational. Often used ironically, esp. in political commentary. \u201cJohn\u2019s non sequitur seemed pretty casey at first, but it turned out to be casey like a fox<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

chrisreed<\/strong> \u2013 v<\/em>. To encode imprecise but perfectly adequate ordinary language texts into precise but incomprehensible formal ones. \u201cScanners that can read bar-codes are easy, but we don\u2019t yet have near the technology that can chrisreed even the simplest barroom argument<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

cicero<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>, pl.\u00a0 A Latinate term for untamed figures of speech, famous from the opening of the debaters\u2019 traditional drinking song:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cOh, give me a tome, where the cicero roam \/ <\/em>and krabbe and eemeren play;\/ <\/em>Where johnsons abound, tony-blairs can be found \/ <\/em>And a perelman can argue all day<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

cohen<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. An incomprehensible metaphor. Zen cohens make no sense before you work through them; dan cohens make no sense after you work through them.<\/p>\n

corina<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0n<\/em>. A tight spot from which there is no apparent way out. \u201cDuring the interview, we strategically maneuvered Andone into a corina by way of a bartgarrsen, but she was able to execute a sneaky henkeman to escape<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

correia-vascolar<\/strong> \u2013 adj<\/em>. Relating to the emotional-cognitive system. \u201cHe suffered from a correia-vascolar disorder that allowed his emotions to get the better of him<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

danblon<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0gerund<\/em>. The rhetorical act of reinforcement by narrative repetition. \u201cAlthough her original argument didn\u2019t have much effect, Emmanuelle eventually succeeded by danblon down on her position<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

dascal\u2019s wager<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. The action of a compulsive arguer; putting one\u2019s mouth where one\u2019s money is in regards to the claim that it is always reasonable to argue in the pursuit of knowledge.<\/p>\n

derek<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0n<\/em>. A large crane used to draw out weighty conclusions. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t get the conclusion to fall into place until we gave the derek to Allen<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

didier<\/strong> \u2013 v<\/em>. To exploit spatial reference frames in manipulating the course of an argument. \u201cI thought we were discussing second-language acquisition but Maillat\u2019s graphs and charts, somehow didiered me into arguing about pragmatics and persuasion<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

ducrot<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. The unit of \u201cargumentivity\u201d in an enunciation as measured by the straight-line distance \u2013 \u201cas ducrot flies\u201d\u2013 from the \u201ccenter of the description\u201d to its implied conclusion.<\/p>\n

dufour<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. An analytic partitioning of the history of a discipline. \u201cAristotle, Ockham, Mill, and Hamblin represent dufour stages of fallacy theory<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

duran<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. The \u201cover-time\u201d following the natural conclusion of an argument, hence the idiom \u201cSingin\u2019 in Duran\u201d\u00a0 as a euphemism for Beating a Dead Horse. \u201cClaudio\u2019s extended defense of multi-modal scientific argumentation performatively demonstrated that Singin\u2019 in Duran was indeed possible in several different modalities at once.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

dutilh novaes<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. The companion to via moderna in logic, the \u201cnew\u201d, i.e.. post-Ockhamite, way of thinking about argumentation, in contrast to via antigua and dutilh Aristoteles.<\/p>\n

E<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

eemeren<\/strong> \u00ad\u2013 n. <\/em>(From the acronym \u201cM.R.N.\u201d) Multiply-regulated negotiations. \u201cUnless we can get management and the union to agree to an eemeren, the dispute will never be resolved<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

El Sebarth<\/strong> \u2013 The legendary heroine whose battle-cry, \u201cEmpire Callogic<\/em>!\u201d struck fear in the hearts of Formal Dragons everywhere.<\/p>\n

ennis<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. Originally, an archaic and obscure game of wits. The term now refers to any test of one\u2019s critical thinking abilities. Hence, the idiom \u201cEnnis, anyone?\u201d as an invitation to argue.<\/p>\n

F<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

facione<\/strong> \u2013 v<\/em>. To construct an argument map in order to help one think critically about making the decision to argue for a decision that has already been made. \u201cPeter facioned himself a mover and a shaker but never got past the facioning stage<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

fahnestock<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. The supply of figures of speech available for a specific argumentative context. \u201cWhen you argue with Jeanne, be prepared for a veritable tindale wave of rhetorical figures pulled out of her fahnestock<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

fair fasko<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. The proper critical procedure for refereeing manuscripts: \u201cI had hoped Danthen Frank\u2019s journal would be able to give my article fair fasko, but they rejected it, too, so I guess I was wrong<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

faircloth<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0n<\/em>. The fabric of civil society. \u201cIf the other side in an argument automatically dismisses anything untoward as \u2018fake news\u2019, then normal faircloth wlll dissolve under the corrosive effects of their political CDA (Cynical Distort Abuse), so you\u2019ll have to dress your position in \u2018bela faircloth<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

feteris paribus<\/em> clause<\/strong> \u2013 A qualifying clause applicable only in legal contexts.<\/p>\n

finocchiaro<\/strong> \u2013 adj<\/em>. (fin<\/em> + chiaro<\/em>, end of light) Purified of all clarity; rendered obscure. \u201cI thought I understood Galileo\u2019s argument until that deft analysis made it all finocchiaro<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

fogelin<\/strong> \u2013 v<\/em>. Blaming the lack of progress on an intractable deep disagreement: \u201cThe deadline\u2019s approaching so we need to get serious about these negotiations. No more fogelin around<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frans of Argument<\/strong>\u2013 n<\/em>. A formal society dedicated to the improvement of critical discussions by imposing an ascetic code of conduct. \u201cIf you want to be one of the Frans of argument, you must agree to argue by the rules, but some strategic maneuvering is allowed<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

freeman<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. A premise unfettered by any objections, so vacuously acceptable to everyone. 1 freeman = 10 kilo-quintilians.<\/p>\n

G<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

gabby<\/strong> \u2013 adj<\/em>. Prosodically enhanced. \u201cLet\u2019s get Kisi\u00e7ek as a kat-arina. She knows better than anyone how to make an argument gabby.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

gascon-aid<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. Architectural feature giving an ambiguous perspective from a great height. \u201cAlthough attacked from different sides, they could retreat to \u00a0opposite sides of the gascon-aid as needed<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

gilbert<\/strong>\u2013 n<\/em>. The unit of measurement for the kisceral quotient of an argument. \u201cWhen Miqqi Alicia gets going in an argument, the gilberts really pile up<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

godden<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. A cultivated area for growing beliefs. \u201cDavid has a well-tended memory gooden, but his intuition godden needs weeding<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goddu-zilla<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. A dangerous prehistoric beast wreaking havoc on modern argumentation theory. \u201cDon\u2019t let Goddu-zilla know that you think arguments actually occur in real time!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

goldman<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. An epistemic unit of argument quality. \u201cHer argument was worth its weight in goldmans.\u201d<\/p>\n
