He was an undergraduate student at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smcm.edu\/biology\/\">St. Mary&#8217;s College of Maryland<\/a>, where he studied biology. He learned how to do research with Bob Paul and Donna Iannotti examining enzyme phosphorylation during hibernation in limpets and with <a href=\"https:\/\/inside.smcm.edu\/directory\/karen-crawford\">Karen Crawford<\/a> exploring regulatory proteins during regeneration in annelid worms. His doctoral work with <a href=\"https:\/\/biology.indiana.edu\/about\/faculty\/kaufman-thom.html\">Thom Kaufman<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/biology.indiana.edu\/index.html\">Indiana University<\/a> described the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16112665\">patterning of appendages<\/a> in a hemimetabolous insects, the milkweed bug. Dave then moved to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.uconn.edu\/\">University of Connecticut<\/a> for a postdoctoral fellowship in the lab of <a href=\"https:\/\/jockusch.eeb.uconn.edu\/\">Elizabeth Jockusch<\/a>, where he examined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22384402\">appendage patterning in flour beetles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Angelini Lab now investigates issues of alternative outcomes in development and the interactions of genes and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Dave has taught a wide range of courses, including introductory biology, genetics, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/devbio\/\">developmental biology<\/a>, molecular biology, evolutionary developmental biology (<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/evodevo\/\">evo-devo<\/a>) and a senior seminar in integrative biology.<\/p>\n<p>dave.angelini<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-444\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bugsinourbackyard.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/at.jpg\" alt=\"at\" width=\"14\" height=\"19\">colby.edu &nbsp; &#8211; &nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Aphanotus\">@Aphanotus<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Devin O&#8217;Brien<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/aphanotus\/files\/2019\/09\/img-3111.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-317 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/aphanotus\/files\/2019\/09\/img-3111-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/a>Devin is an NSF postdoctoral fellow studying the evolution and development of red shoulder soapberry bugs (<em>Jadera haematoloma<\/em>).&nbsp;Broadly speaking, Devin is interested in the evolution of &#8220;extreme&#8221; and &#8220;bizarre&#8221; morphology and its&nbsp;the costs and benefits to the organism.
