{"id":170,"date":"2016-09-22T10:42:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T14:42:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/?p=170"},"modified":"2016-09-22T10:42:34","modified_gmt":"2016-09-22T14:42:34","slug":"landscape-the-battle-between-man-and-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/2016\/09\/22\/landscape-the-battle-between-man-and-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"Landscape: the battle between man and nature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I found the focus on the theme of Man vs Nature in Meinig&#8217;s 10 perspectives on landscapes\u00a0very intriguing. \u00a0I had never thought about visualizing a landscape as such a battleground between man and nature before. \u00a0I think that each way of looking at landscape had its\u00a0strengths as well as its weaknesses. \u00a0There was no one way that stood out to me as the way that I would\u00a0always want to look at a landscape, rather each one represented a different lens for observing a landscape that would only be ideal for\u00a0a specific setting. \u00a0This reminded me about the Harvey reading and our discussion on the relational view of spacetime. \u00a0In the relational view Harvey claims that it is\u00a0&#8220;impossible to disentangle space and time&#8221; because of the &#8220;relationalities&#8221; that subjectively and subconsciously exist for all of us (Harvey 14). \u00a0The relationalities between man and\u00a0nature in many of Meinig&#8217;s\u00a0perspectives on\u00a0landscape make visualizing the landscape a relational view. \u00a0For example, the landscape as nature view requires the viewer to see man as\u00a0&#8220;miniscule&#8221;\u00a0and all of his creations as &#8220;mere scratchings on the skin of Mother Earth&#8221; (Meinig 34). \u00a0On the other hand, the artifact\u00a0view takes the perspective that nature only &#8220;provides a stage&#8221; for man and his creations,\u00a0so that no pristine nature actually exists and all is tainted by man to varying degrees. \u00a0Many of Meinig&#8217;s other perspectives on landscape\u00a0share the man vs nature theme too. \u00a0The ability to\u00a0look at landscapes through different lenses and perspectives I think is a necessary and important process towards artistic expression. \u00a0Going forward in the course as we look at different landscapes of coastal Maine through photography, painting and other art forms, determining the lens or perspective used by the artist will become valuable to our understanding of the artists message and purpose for choosing that specific landscape.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I found the focus on the theme of Man vs Nature in Meinig&#8217;s 10 perspectives on landscapes\u00a0very intriguing. \u00a0I had never thought about visualizing a landscape as such a battleground between man and nature before. \u00a0I think that each way of looking at landscape had its\u00a0strengths as well as its weaknesses. \u00a0There was no one [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6517,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[330309],"tags":[],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/170"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/6517"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=170"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/170\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":182,"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/170\/revisions\/182"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=170"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=170"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/allen-island\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=170"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
