Olivia Balcos (she/her) is part of the Class of 2020 at Colby College, currently completing a major in Anthropology and a minor in Creative Writing. Born and raised in one of the most diverse cities in the U.S., Jersey City, NJ, Balcos quickly found herself drawn to student activist spaces on campus, most notably The Pugh Center. Balcos is the co-president of the Asian Student Association (ASA), where she helps build community for Asian and Asian American students, in addition to being the president of the Four Winds Native American Alliance, which provides a space for Native students to simply be and a space for non-Natives to learn how to act in solidarity with indigenous peoples. In this podcast episode, Balcos reflects on what student activism looks like on Colby’s campus and how her personal approach to activism is largely informed by her work outside of Colby as a member of Gabriela NJ: a group in her hometown fighting for the liberation of Filipino women.
