{"id":313,"date":"2010-12-09T09:55:28","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T13:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/activism\/"},"modified":"2012-08-17T15:09:33","modified_gmt":"2012-08-17T19:09:33","slug":"coalitio","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/activism\/stories\/coalitio\/","title":{"rendered":"The Coalition for Institutional Accountability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/activism\/files\/2010\/12\/cia.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-842 alignright\" title=\"cia\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/activism\/files\/2010\/12\/cia.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"147\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a>On April 12, 2002, a group of students of color, in coalition with a group of queer students, organized a silent protest against\u00a0institutional racism and heterosexism at Colby during the spring Board of Trustees meeting. \u00a0Calling themselves the &#8220;Coalition for Institutional Accountability&#8221; (CIA), led by\u00a0Javanese M. Hailey, Juliet M. Land, Elizabeth M. Parks, and Mindy F. Pinto, the group presented the following demands to the trustees:<\/p>\n<p><strong>I. Primary Demands <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Commitment to and timeline for implementing a residential Multicultural House<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;The trustees will research the success of similar multicultural houses at sister NESCAC schools, including Bowdoin, Middlebury and Connecticut College.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;If a Multicultural House is not approved, the Trustees will provide a written response to the individuals listed below, explaining the rationale for that denial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strengthen Colby\u2019s curricular and academic commitment to multiculturalism and diversity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>&#8211;A commitment of financial and institutional support for a Queer Studies program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;3 of the 10 new faculty hires will be allocated for programs incorporating race\/ethnicity and Queer Studies into their curricula.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;A program for research on inequality to be part of the Center for Public and International Affairs.<\/p>\n<p><strong> II. Secondary Demands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>&#8211;Fulfillment of the initiatives toward improving queer life on campus promised by President Cotter in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Increased enrollment of Native American students, with special consideration for members of Maine tribal nations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Examination of the relationship between the dining hall and residential staff and the rest of campus, paying particular interest to the class dynamics that dictate their working conditions and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;A feature article in Colby Magazine on this demonstration and the experiences of students of color and queer students, written in consultation with these students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Repair the Black Entertainment Television channel on campus.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em style=\"text-align: center;\">THE DEADLINE FOR RESPONSE TO THESE DEMANDS IS MAY 1, 2002<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition, the CIA presented a <a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/activism\/files\/2010\/12\/A-Supplement-to-the-Strategic-Plan-for-Colby.pdf\">&#8220;Supplement to the Strategic Plan for Colby,&#8221;<\/a> to contribute to the dialogue about strategic planning that had been initiated by the new President, William Adams. \u00a0 That document included a very important &#8220;Appendix A&#8221; that outlined incidents of Micro-Aggressions experienced by students of color and queer students on campus.<\/p>\n<span class=\"facebook-like\"><fb:like layout=\"box_count\" show_faces=\"false\" width=\"45\" href=\"https:\/\/web.colby.edu\/activism\/stories\/coalitio\/\"><\/fb:like><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On April 12, 2002, a group of students of color, in coalition with a group of queer students, organized a silent protest against\u00a0institutional racism and heterosexism at Colby during the spring Board of Trustees meeting. \u00a0Calling themselves the &#8220;Coalition for Institutional Accountability&#8221; (CIA), led by\u00a0Javanese M.
