I am an anthropologist and writer living in Central Maine, where I teach at Colby College.

I first arrived in Colombia in the summer of 1988. I had just graduated from high school, and wanted to do something besides go to school before starting college. I ended up staying for a year and half, doing volunteer work in a Bienestar Familiar day care in Ibague, and with a street children lunch progam in Cartagena.

I also took a semester of classes at the National University, in the Department of Anthropology, and was an intern in the Human Rights Office of a Jesuit organization, CINEP.

I lived with friends in La Perseverancia, an old neighborhood in Bogota.

I keep going back.
