Message from Friends of Colby Rugby:

Happy New Year from Mayflower Hill! We are excited to share an important announcement with you today. After working extensively with the College, the Friends of Colby Rugby has been established to support both the women’s and men’s rugby teams on and off the field. Friends of Colby Rugby will consist of alumni and alumnae, parents and families, and members of the Colby Rugby community. Fundraising by Friends of Colby Rugby will allow us to support Colby Rugby while providing resources and enhancements for the club; it does not replace funding by the Department of Athletics.

Colby Rugby has grown tremendously over the past couple of years. Rugby alumni are now stronger than ever. Alumni first gathered for a reunion in Boston in 2013, and then in New York City in 2015. Each time, members of the current Colby Rugby teams joined alumni to share stories and learn about the history of Colby Rugby. Colby Rugby was a formative part of our Colby experience and we are going to make sure the Rugby program thrives in the years to come.

In the coming months, you will hear more about what you can do to help keep Colby Rugby strong for current and future students, connect with Rugby Alumni and Alumnae, and follow the teams.  If you’d like to join the Friends of Colby Rugby alumni committee, do not hesitate to contact Jen Coliflores ’06 jennifercoliflores@gmail.com or Dave Fernandez ’89 Dave_Fernandez@comcast.net. If you’d like to contact the players, feel free to reach out to Kiernan Somers ’17 (kjsomers@colby.edu) or Jocelyn Ng ’18 (wtjng@colby.edu).

We are working with the Rugby teams and the Athletics Department to develop our plans to support Colby Rugby in the short and long term. You can become an official Friend of Colby Rugby today by donating today – $25-$50-$100 or whatever amount you can helps keep the Club on sound financial ground. Your donation is restricted to the Rugby program but does count as a gift to Colby.  Please show your support and donate today at:  http://www.colby.edu/friendsofathletics/ and select Rugby.

This past fall, both the Men’s and Women’s teams had promising seasons. After going 3-3 in the fall season and defeating the University of Maine 22-5 in the New England Small College Rugby Conference, the Women’s team finished third overall in their conference. The Men’s team performed admirably in a rebuilding year for the club. Finishing the season 1-5, the club was plagued by injuries to many veteran players. The young team struggled against experienced competition; however, the team utilized its depth and several key players distinguished themselves. Each club is looking forward to the spring tournament season in order to build upon their fall successes and gain experience.

Message from the Colby Rugby Development Committee:

Dear Colby Rugby Alumni and Alumnae,

Another season has come to a close and we would like to thank you all for being such tremendous supporters of our program this past year. Your encouraging words, positive energy and simply just being there for every member of the team, have made this an outstanding year in many different ways. Colby Rugby is truly a family and we wouldn’t be where we are today without every member.

Vice President of Academic affairs and Dean of Faculty Lori Kletzer announced in April that the College had reached a cost-sharing agreement that will allow Colby Rugby to continue. Although this is a step in the right direction, we still have a lot of work ahead of us. The agreement divides the expenses among three parties. The College will pay $35,500 annually and players will each pay a participation fee of approximately $200. We are reaching out to you today to help us cover the expected remaining $17,500.

Knowing the value of rugby to the Colby community, two families have stepped forward to make a significant challenge gift. For every $1 alumni like you donate to Colby Rugby they will donate an additional $3 until we reach our goal of $17,500.

Being close to our goal, we want to encourage you to give at whatever level is comfortable for you and commit to making a similar donation for the next two years. Should we exceed our goal, any additional money raised will roll over into the following year’s budget or go toward a pool of funds to be used at the team leaders’ and coaches’ discretion for equipment, travel budget enhancement, or player fee reduction. Please send any amount to:

Again, thank you very much for your support. You are each essential members of our team, and we hope to thank you in person at an upcoming game this fall or at our alumni gala next spring. See you on the sidelines!

Go Mules,
