“Where Are the Women? Portraits of Colby Women” is an art project begun in 2004. The work began as a series of large portraits of Colby’s early women students, especially the first women to attend the college in the 1870s. It includes the first black woman, Marion Thompson Osborne, to graduate from the college in 1904, and other significant or forgotten women of twentieth century . This project is also a critique of the way institutions tend to forget women and other marginalized groups in both written histories and actual archival practices.
