Jacob Cohen worked briefly as a peddler before opening his own clothing store on Bangor’s Broad Street in 1898-99. His clientele were mostly woodsmen and farmers who bought his shirts, coats, boots and dungarees. Jews established clothing stores in towns throughout Maine.
