Current Research
I recently completed the first full-scale biography of Civil War-era Judge Advocate General Joseph Holt, which appeared in the University of North Carolina’s prestigious “Civil War America” series (ed., Gary Gallagher) in fall 2011. Lincoln’s Forgotten Ally is my fifth book of original scholarship on the Civil War era and was co-winner of the 2012 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.
