Midway through Fall 2012, the standup clock in the FWC experienced some trouble when the metal cable on the center weight snapped. In order to get the clock functioning again, the FWC called on Charles Ferguson, professor Emeritus of Italian and French, master of the Colby Book Bindery, and veteran tinkerer. Professor Ferguson, with the help of some FWC staff, spent an hour and a half working in the motion of the clock and finally got the ol’ ticker going again. How old? A cast iron beam inside is embossed with the following: “Pat. May 17, 1904″ Woah.
- Professor Ferguson surveying his work
- The “motion” of the clock…gears, drums, springs, cables, levers, etc.
- Detaching the pendulum
- Patented May 17th, 1904
- The face of the clock and the wooden dome…both needed to be removed for the repairs to take place
