This page provides links to several writing rubrics currently used by Colby faculty. The first, developed largely by Professor Laurie Osborne, is the English department’s statement on excellent college writing. The second is a rubric provided by Associate Professor Laura Saltz, director of the American Studies Program; the third comes from Assistant Professor Elizabeth LaCouture of the East Asian Studies Department; and the fourth is the rubric developed by Professor Michael Burke for the faculty writing assessment of essays written by incoming, first-year students. Laura Saltz’s rubric was originally developed by the Harvard Writing Center and Elizabeth LaCouture adopted hers from the Princeton University history department.
