Charles Edson Owen, Colby Class of 1879, was at the time the oldest member of the board of trustees of Colby College, having served continuously from 1900 until his death in 1941. He was born in Leeds, Maine on October 25, 1852 to Charles and Martha Ann Owen. He attended Kents Hill and then Colby College. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Zeta Psi fraternity. Upon graduating, he married Ellen Nason. They had two children, Edna Owen and Robert Owen, both of whom attended Colby College. After Colby, Owen taught at Monmouth Academy and later attended Newton Theological Seminary. He was a prominent figure involved in Baptist work in Maine and was a clergyman for 17 years. In 1901 he became financial secretary for Colby, serving until 1904. He was a member of the board of trustees from 1900-1941. He also held secretary posts for the Christian Civic League, the Maine Baptist Education Society, the Maine Baptists Missionary Convention, and the United Baptist Convention for many years. He died on June 7, 1941.
