Bertha Louise Brown

Colby 1888. A.B., A.M. 1891.

Bertha Louise Brown was born in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of Charles B. and Ariminta Brown. She graduated with high honors from Colby College in 1888. In her early life after graduation, she taught high school in Georgetown, Colorado (1888-1891); Marshalltown, Iowa; Somerville, Massachusetts (1891-1895); and in Bangor, Maine (1899-1909). After retiring from teaching, she traveled extensively abroad and spent the winter months in both California and Oregon. She spent summers in the Bayside neighborhood on Penobscot Bay. Brown was an avid lover of nature and in particular of bird life. She was a member of the National Audubon Society, was one of the founders of the Bangor Bird Conservation club, and became a licensed bird bander. She later suffered almost the entire loss of her hearing and eyesight and retired from the activities of outdoor life. She died in Bangor on February 20th, 1948, at the age of 79, following a long period of failing health.
