Alfred King, Colby Class of 1883, was a member of the board of trustees from 1898-1908. He was born July 2, 1861 in Portland, Maine, to Marquis Fayette and Frances Olivia (Plaisted) King. After graduating from Colby, he attended Bowdoin Medical School. He established a medical practice in Portland and later became a surgeon at Maine General Hospital. In 1904 he established a private hospital which also provided a training school for nurses. He also taught anatomy and surgery at Bowdoin Medical School. He was a member of the International Society of Surgeons, the American Therapeutic Society, and other various medical societies. In 1910 Colby conferred upon King the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. He died on June 4, 1916 of septic pneumonia.
