This photo and its caption quickly describe the dwindling polio cases in Pakistan but also highlight the fact that the eradication is still beyond vaccinators’ reach. There have already been five cases of polio in Pakistan in 2012, despite intense vaccination campaigns. The caption blames pro-Taliban and religious groups who, allegedly, say the United States is trying to sterilize Muslims. This blanket defense for eradication failures and blatant ignorance of local realities blames Pakistani culture instead of the eradication initiative for polio’s continued presence in Pakistan. As shown in the career biographies portion of this website, Svea Closser, an anthropologist whose fieldwork focuses on the eradication of polio in Pakistan, would argue this is an oversimplified and very inaccurate portrayal of vaccination campaigns in the region.
