WordPress is a powerful, intuitive, and easy-to-learn open source web authoring application. While it was intially developed as a blogging application, it can be used by anyone at Colby with a username and password to create a personal or professional web site, or a blog.

Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (for Windows operating systems) is an application used to create and format spreadsheets, and analyze information. Excel 2007 will look distinctly different to users who are familiar with previous versions of the spreadsheet application. Most notably, Excel 2007 now has what is called “The Ribbon” which contains all the old features and functions plus a number of new features to be explored.

CommonSpot is the application used by any Colby Department, Club or Organization to create web pages that have been developed using the preset look and feel templates for Colby College web pages. CommonSpot is a Content Management System (CMS) that allows Colby to: establish common attributes on all pages (look and feel), track, organize and manage all content on the system (images, media, text), determine navigational continuity on sites (template-driven), and control access to sensitive information.

For those of us who use the internet for more than email, there’s a lot out there. If you’re like me, I used to go to one news site, browse, go to the next, browse, go to dilbert, read, go to a blog I read, browse, go to another webpage, browse. I’d get lost. I had a few dozen book marks, and half the time I’d spend time checking webpages only to find out they hadn’t been updated. Or I’d forget to check it for a week and miss content.
