Has a Mainer Ever Competed in The Tour de France?

The answer is a YES!

Susan Elias of Readfield was a member of the USA women’s team which competed in the Tour De Feminin (women’s TdF) in 1989.  This race was run concurrently with the men’s race over somewhat shorter distances. Sadly it is no longer held, falling victim to finances.

The link to an Orlando Sentinal article gives some background. Susan was an outstanding runner at UMaine,  became bored with running and discovered cycling.

I find it incredible that she was able to convert to cycling after college and still be that good. I know there is some cross-over between cycling and running, but she must have been very committed to her training to qualify for the TDF!
