All trips to the Allen Island and Herring Gut must be arranged in advance with Whitney King (email@example.com). The dock for Allen Island and the Herring Gut school are both in Port Clyde, Maine. Driving time from Colby is 1:45 minutes. Carpooling is strongly encouraged as summer parking in Port Clyde can be crazy. Please drop your gear and passengers at the dock and park at the Herring Gut School (map). Free day parking is also available on the town pier, but spaces fill up FAST! The following route uses the best roads (Colby College to Cold Storage Rd, St George, ME 04860 – Google Maps). The Allen Island boat will pick up at the dock in front of the Dip Net Restaurant. Herring Gut Alternative Learning Center is a two minute drive from the docks on Factory Rd (Fire Rd 81065).
All visitors to the island must deliver a signed hard copy of the Allen Island Release of Risk form to the boat captain before leaving the dock. (Allen Island Release of Risks 2016 V1).
Travel to Allen Island takes about 30 minutes by boat. The Allen Island boat, Archangel, is a very seaworthy converted lobster boat with a capacity of 15 passengers. The boat will not run if the seas are unsafe, but the ride can be rough at times and passengers are encouraged to bring clothing to keep themselves warm and dry during the five mile trip to the island.
