Using Colby Apps: Move Chat List and Label Before Send

This week I thought I would treat you to two Colby Apps E-mail tricks!

  • Moving the Chat List
  • Label Message Before Sending

Moving the Chat List

If you are like me and have several labels/folders on the left-hand side of your Colby Apps E-mail, you probably get frustrated by that little Chat List at the bottom always getting in your way. Here are a few simple steps to move that Chat List to the right-hand side of the window, getting it out of your way forever:

  1. Log into your Colby Apps E-mail (http://email.colby.edu/).
  2. Click the gear icon () in the top right corner of your screen.
  3. From the drop-down menu, choose Labs
  4. In the list of Labs scroll down to find Right-side chat and click the option to Enable.
  5. Scroll all the way to the bottom of this screen and click Save Changes

That’s it! The Chat List should now be on the right-hand side of your screen, allowing more room for your labels/folders list.

Note: The Faculty and Staff Support Center (x4222) can only offer limited support for Labs add-ons.

Label Message Before Sending

One of the most powerful (and often overlooked) features of Colby Apps E-mail are the labels. Labels allow you to organize your e-mail messages in a similar fashion to folders, but with one huge upside: you can apply more than one label to an e-mail message.

Programs like Outlook and Entourage only allow you to file a single e-mail message in one folder, but often times you want that message organized in several folders (for instance you might have a message that you want to put in your “From the boss” folder as well as the “Follow-up” and “RE: ABC Project” folders). Colby Apps E-mail labels allow you to do this.

Until recently if you wanted to apply a label to a message you were sending you had to send it first, then go to your Sent Mail folder, open the message and apply your label. Thankfully Google added a new feature that allows you to apply labels before you click Send.

  1. After composing your message, click the Labels drop-down at the top of your screen and apply as many labels as you want.
  2. When you are done applying your labels, simply click the SEND button.
